Baggage limit: general information and restrictions
When traveling to international destinations, baggage limit becomes a real issue, as various restrictions are imposed by official travel government bodies. Once you make sure you have everything you need packed, it is advised to check the list of the items prohibited on an airplane and also take in consideration the baggage limit, which may vary depending on each air travel company's policy.
In the United States the general rule on domestic flights is for each passenger to check two pieces of luggage weighing no more than 50 pounds (22.7 kg) each. However, in Europe, and flights between USA and Europe the baggage limit is 40 pounds (18 kg) for each passenger, and a series of airlines do not allow their clients to carry excessive luggage, even with payment of extra cost. The luggage we check at the airport is measured according to its weight, and the airline representatives will inform the passenger of an eventual excess of baggage limit.
Carry-on luggage is generally measured by its dimensions, but the restrictions concerning the objects one carries in the airplane are more severe. Due to high security measures, baggage limit is a priority. Also, the list of banned objects on commercial flights is very long, and includes but is not limited to the following: scissors, razor blades, knives, replica guns, flammable liquids and solids, fireworks, matches, fire lighters, poisons, acids or radioactive materials. Electrical devices are allowed on the plane, but they have to be screened separately and checked cautiously.
When dealing with baggage limit, general information show that when traveling in economy class of commercial flights, depending on each airline, route and destination, the passengers are allowed to check luggage weighing approximately 20 kg. For business class, the baggage limit goes up to 30 kg. It is the passenger's obligation to get information on general air travel conditions, restrictions and various details concerning the baggage they carry to the airport.
The carry-on luggage is weighed separately, and it is generally measured according to its dimensions. In this case, the baggage limit cannot exceed 7-10 kg; passengers are also allowed to take with them coats, umbrellas, books or video cameras. Business class passengers have the right to carry an extra piece of luggage or suitcase, which cannot be heavier than 8 kg.
Wherever you may plan to travel, keep in mind two aspects: baggage limit and the list of banned objects, as it is important to avoid unnecessary delays at airport security.
